Silverswords
Plants are not something I normally photograph but this is an exception. The Silverswords is found only within a 250 acre area on Mount Haleakala, on the island of Maui. It lives 10-50 years and ends it’s life when this stalk grows to 6 feet high and creates hundreds of red flowers. I’ve seen this plant in that state two years ago but have never seen the beginning of that growth as represented in this photo. There are two very small Silverwoods to the left and right that are just starting their cycle.
Baby Bamboo
The Pipiwai trail hike is located in the Haleakala National Park at Oheo Gulch. It is a 4 mile round trip hike up a valley to the falls. On the way you walk through a bamboo forest so thick you rarely see sunshine. I happened upon these baby bamboo plants just as the sun hit them. I have other shots of the forest and the falls which I’ll post later but wanted to show how this simple shot turned out.
Orchid & Bomber
I was in the small town of Guadalupe yesterday and saw this in the window of a Chinese restaurant. I found the contrast interesting. The place was closed so I couldn’t ask about it. One could say it’s a statement about peace and war like the 60’s when the hippie’s put flowers in the businessend of a solder’s rifle. Or it could be that the owner just put them there for no reason. I may go back when they’re open and ask – or just let it be a mystery.
